About Us
The Free Zone Shelter and the Brestice Shelter for abandoned dogs are located in Nikšić and provide a safe haven for abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs. Our work is based on care, responsibility, and immense love for animals that have, often through no fault of their own, been left without a home.
The Free Zone currently houses around 90 dogs, as does the Brestice shelter. Each of them has their own story – some were rescued from the streets, some from inhumane conditions, and some were simply abandoned. Despite their difficult experiences, our dogs are full of love, trust, and a desire for attention.
All dogs in our shelter are spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies and infectious diseases, regularly fed, and under veterinary supervision. We strive to provide them with the best possible conditions, but a shelter can never replace a real home. That is why our greatest goal is adoption – so that every dog gets a chance at the life they deserve.
We believe that adoption doesn't just save one life, it changes two – the life of the dog and the life of the person who opens the door of their home. Our team and volunteers work daily on socializing dogs, preparing them for family life, and promoting responsible ownership.
If you cannot adopt, you can still help – by spreading the word about our dogs, volunteering, or donating. Every bit of help, no matter how small, makes a big difference.
Our Goals
- Adopting as many dogs as possible and finding permanent, responsible homes
- Reducing the number of abandoned dogs through sterilization and community education
- Providing safe and humane shelter for all dogs that arrive at the shelter
- Improving conditions in the shelter so dogs can have the best quality of life while waiting for a home
- Raising awareness about responsible ownership, the importance of sterilization, and proper animal care
- Collaborating with volunteers, veterinarians, and animal lovers for collective action
- Educating youth and the wider community about empathy, humanity, and animal protection
